It has the Gorham maker's mark with STERLING B1294 on the bottom, and this item is in excellent condition, with no monograms, corrosion, repairs or damage; there is a tiny dent on the bottom. Sheffield plate predates electroplating and it consists of thin layers of silver laid on to copper sheets; the sandwich of metals is then formed into the desired object.
